Outside my Front Door is a series of posts by fellow travel bloggers who share what is … outside of their own front door

The view from our front door is ever changing because for the last 3 years we’ve travelled the world perpetually.

We’re currently travelling through New Zealand with a caravan and if I open our front door right now, I am greeted with a view of Lake Hawea.

If you had asked me yesterday I would have said neighbouring Aoraki National Park and the indomitable mountain peaks of the alpine range it encompasses. The day before, I would have seen the flats of the Mackenzie Basin and the last of the colourful Lupin flowers which adorn the ground at this time of year.

Six months ago our door opened out onto a lifestyle farm on New Zealand’s north island, and six months before that we were cruising through Australia’s Whitsunday Islands on a motor yacht so I would have been looking at azure blue water and a horizon dotted with paradisiacal islands.

The view from our front door is ever changing because we choose to explore the world rather than put down roots.

Utilising a mix of house sitting assignments and road trips whereby we purchase a vehicle and head out into the wilds of the country we are visiting, we live for adventure.

Striving where possible to travel in a financially sustainable manner, we chose to immerse ourselves in the locations we visit rather than follow the well-trodden tourist trail. Our house sitting assignments in particular serve to integrate us into local communities all over the world, and have offered us the opportunity to learn some rather unique skills and meet a range of colourful characters.

If you’re not familiar with the concept, house siting is essentially an exchange of services.

By inviting a house sitter to care for their property and pets, home owners can negate the cost of kennels, gardeners and cleaners when they head off on holiday. House sitters in turn are rewarded with rent free living in return for stepping into the shoes of the owner.

We were introduced to house sitting when we came across Trusted House Sitters, a website which connects home owners looking for property and pet care, with people willing to take on those responsibilities for an agreed period of time.

While at first I was a little cautious, unsure of exactly why a stranger would invite me into their home and allow me to live there rent free, our experiences have shown me just how the exchange benefits both parties.

For us house sitting has quite literally shaped our experience of travel. It has allowed us to open a wealth of front doors over the last 3 years, and look out over some of the most scenic vistas Mother Nature has to offer.

My favourite assignment to date was a month long stint in the lush jungle of Southern Costa Rica.

Alive with colour and a diverse range of flora and fauna, the property was nestled amongst a cashew farm on the side of a mountain on the Pacific coast of the country.

Caring for the owner’s dog, a playful retriever who spent his days chasing butterflies and exploring the surrounding rainforest, our time there showed us that simple living, sunshine and clean air are the perfect remedy to sooth the soul.

We fell in love with the country, its people and the dramatic ocean sunsets which painted the sky each evening. We ate fresh produce, cooked basic meals and savoured the taste of the tropical fruits that grew in the garden.

Life was simple but we found reward in everything we did during our stay.

We also made friends with the neighbours, a colourful troop of expats from across the globe and locals who lived life with such vibrancy our memories are some of our most treasured from our travels.

For now we are content with opening numerous doors never having one to really call our own.

I imagine at some point we will crave a heavy wooden front door with a brass knocker and a view that simply changes with the seasons. However that is something we will look forward to in the future.

At the moment I’m looking forward to further house sitting assignments and road trips as we slowly tick off items on our ever growing life list.
